Fighting for Freedom? Conservatism, human rights and discrimination conference

Tuesday 12th June, 2018, 08.45-13.30 onwards

Bright Blue’s Fighting for Freedom? Conservatism, human rights and discrimination conference will explore and champion centre-right approaches to tackling all forms of discrimination in education, employment and wider society as part of the Prime Minister’s ‘Burning injustices’ agenda, and to strengthening human rights overseas as part of the Government’s post-Brexit ‘Global Britain strategy’.

The event will begin at 9am with a keynote speech from Dr Phillip Lee MP, Minister for Human Rights, on the topic of Conservatism and human rights.

There will be two panel discussions on ‘Tackling discrimination in the UK’ and ‘Championing human rights overseas’, with panellists such as The Rt Hon Maria Miller MP (Chair, Women and Equalities Select Committee), The Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP (former Secretary of State for International Development), Kate Allen (Director, Amnesty International), David Isaac (Chair, Equality and Human Rights Commission), and Sir Michael Tugendhat (Former High Court Judge). At the end of the conference, delegates will be invited to a networking lunch.

Launch of ‘Burning injustices’ essay collection

Burning Britain? Tackling ‘burning injustices’ that blight Britain

To launch our cross-party essay collection ‘Burning Britain?’ Bright Blue and Joseph Rowntree Foundation hosted a panel discussion with several contributors on their essays.

Highlights of the essay collection include: the Conservative Party’s Nicky Morgan MP – now Chair of the Treasury Select Committee – writing about the nature and scale of gender discrimination; the Labour Party’s David Lammy MP examining the extent of racial discrimination; Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb MP – Chair of the Science and Technology Committee – exploring mental health in modern Britain; and the Green Party’s Caroline Lucas MP focussing on drug abuse.
